EC Conference on Earth observation

Focus Africa - Water Observation and Information System WOIS. In an effort to promote the Water Observation and Information System (WOIS), Dr. Benjamin Koetz of ESA and Dr. Christian Hoffmann, CEO of GeoVille, hosted a presentation at the conference on Earth Observation for sustainable water resource management - data, tools & capacity development entitled "Satellites Looking for Water in Africa". The conference was organized by the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development on 22nd June 2015 in Brussels.

Christian Hoffmann, after thanking EU's DEVCO for providing this opportunity and ESA for the funding of TIGER-NET highlighted Earth Observation as a highly accurate and reliable tool for water resources management by monitoring and assessing the state of the resources in relation to fresh water quality and availability, water demand modelling, hydrological modelling and flood mapping/forecasting. Within the ESA-financed TIGER-NET project, GeoVille developed with DHI GRAS and research partners the satellite-based Water Observation and Information System. WOIS provides a significant capacity for monitoring, assessing and inventorying water resources in Africa in a cost-effective manner.
