Sentinel Core Missions S1 - S6

The Sentinel missions were specifically developed for the operational needs of the Copernicus program, to address challenges like urbanization and food security and of course the consequences of climate change, e.g. natural disasters and sea level rising. 

Each mission comprises a constellation of satellites to ensure a high revisit rate and global coverage.  

• Sentinel-1: All-weather, day-and-night radar imaging mission for land and ocean monitoring 

• Sentinel-2: Multispectral high-resolution imaging mission for land observation 

• Sentinel-3: Multi-instrument mission for monitoring sea-surface topography, sea- and land-surface temperature, ocean and land colour 

• Sentinel-4: Atmospheric monitoring 

• Sentinel-5P: Timely data on trace gases and aerosols affecting air quality and climate 

• Sentinel-5: Atmospheric monitoring from polar orbit 

• Sentinel-6: Radar altimeter to observe global sea-surface height 

Sentinel expansion missions

The six Sentinel Expansion missions that are being developed by ESA will address current gaps in Copernicus user needs and EU policy. 

• CHIME (Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission for the Environment): High-resolution hyperspectral imagery for improvement of agricultural practices and resources management. 

• CIMR (Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer): Wide-swath multi-frequency microwave radiometer for sea-surface temperature, sea-ice concentration and sea-surface salinity observation. 

• CO2M (Copernicus Anthropogenic Carbon Dioxide Monitoring): Spectrometer for atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane measurements, focusing on human activity emissions 

• CRISTAL (Copernicus Polar ice and Snow Topography Altimeter): Radar altimeter and microwave radiometer, that monitors land and sea ice thickness and snow depth 

• LSTM (Copernicus Land Surface Temperature Monitoring): High-resolution thermal-infrared sensor for land-surface temperature and emissivity measurements. 

• ROSE-L (Copernicus L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar):  Enables the monitoring of geohazards, the observation of land use, agriculture and forestry, the provision of high-resolution data on soil moisture and the monitoring of the Arctic and the cryosphere.

High Resolution (HR)

High resolution satellite data may hide the smallest objects, but is suited perfectly for the exploration of larger Areas of Interest

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Independent from daytime and weather conditions, the different acquisitions modes of SAR sensors offer different resolutions for various applications

Nighttime imagery

The VHR nighttime data is the ideal solution for analysing population and light pollution or for the detection of illegal fishing.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) 

25m – 50m 

The accurate detection, measurement and monitoring of greenhouse gases using satellites enables the identification of emission point sources and supports informed decision-making.

Elevation data

GeoVille can provide Digital Terrain Models (DTM), Digital Surface Models (DSM) and normalized Digital Surface Models (nDSM). 

Our Elevation Data portfolio ranges from on demand high-precision and high-resolution data (starting at 0.5m resolution) to a worldwide coverage of medium-resolution data available off-the-shelf. 

Clutter data

GeoVille has a lont-term experience in producing Clutter Data for Telecommunication Companies. The Clutter Data is used for calculations of the 3/4/5G atoll propagation and  includes different thematic classes regarding obstacles affecting the radio field as well as object elevation information. 

Building footprint data

Building footprints depict the visible roof area and are extracted semi-automatically through very high-resolution satellite or aerial imagery and elevation data. Data are provided in generalised, cadastre-like vector format and optionally with additional attributes (e.g. building height, footprint area, stories, floor area). 

Building footprints can be cartographically corrected to fit with existing geodata. 

Population raster data

GeoVille provides high-resolution population distribution information via spatial disaggregation of census statistics with EO land cover / land use data. Residential (nighttime) population is spatially allocated to residential areas, while daytime population rasters are created through integration of data on commuters, employees, workplaces and points of interest. Population data are distributed on flexible reference units, such as grid cells or building blocks. 

Satellite image mosaics

GeoVille has a longstanding expertise in establishing visually harmonic, analysis-ready and cloud-free satellite mosaics. Geo-referenced image mosaics cover regions, countries and continents with homogeneous image data and are ready for integration into the GIS as a rich information source for a wide range of applications. 

Image mosaics are available off-the-shelf for many regions in the world and can be produced on demand for your area of interest in any target spatial and spectral resolution, for any given date. 

Digital reference data

GeoVille provides ancillary digital geographic reference data sets from major producers. These include databases for:

• transport networks and traffic loads 

• points of interest 

• ground control points 

• geo-physical, meteorological and climatic parameters
