Geospatial data on the extent, development and density of built-up areas and soil sealing is used to analyse, describe and understand the drivers, pressure, state and impact of land take.
Additionally it serves as a base input for, e.g. the analysis of population distribution and exposure, infrastructure planning, tax monitoring or agricultural payments controls.
GeoVille is the inventor of the high-resolution Imperviousness Layer, the core reference product for built-up areas in the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service. GeoVille has been operationally producing those baseline reference maps for EEA-39 as well as globally in the frame of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service.
Very high resolution inventorying of urban green (trees, parks, gardens) and blue infrastructure (rivers, canals, ponds, lakes) is used for planning of recreational areas, mitigating effects of heat waves, and improving quality of life.
Spatial assessment of natural hazards and climate change impacts to identify areas of risk, in order to identify potential low-risk areas for future peri-urban expansion and guidance of financial interventions.
Geospatial data about the extent and severity of natural hazards and climate change effects (e.g. sea level rise, flooding, drought) are used to map the exposure and potential vulnerability of urban assets as well as local population in larger metropolitan areas.

GeoVille has invented a spatial disaggregation of census statistics with Earth observation land cover / land use data method. Residential (night-time) population is spatially allocated to residential areas, while day-time population rasters are created through integration of data on commuters, employees, work places and points of interest.
Population data are distributed on flexible reference units, such as grid cells or building blocks. Combination with urban growth models allows prediction of the spatial age distribution over large areas.
Monitoring of rising land surface temperature as a consequence of amplified warming in built-up environments, known as the ‘urban heat island’ effect.
Land surface temperature is a direct measurement from thermal sensors and depicts potential heat stress to the local population, creating a baseline for the optimisation of public health services, infrastructure planning as well as improved access to cool spaces during heatwaves.
GeoVille provides a unique, seamless high-resolution land surface temperature product in 10m resolution. Moreover, the forecast product provides spatial explicit representation of potential future surface temperatures based on IPCC climate scenarios.
Climate change is impacting and will continue to impact the European continent, leading to more frequent heat waves and extreme colds, floods, storms and droughts. In this context, it is even more important for urban residents, city authorities, national and EU institutions to receive information about how they will be affected and to plan accordingly.
To support their climate change adaption strategies, the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, under an EC contract, commissioned GeoVille to derive and provide high-resolution population data to show where people reside, where they move during day-time and how they are affected by climate change impacts. The results were then further combined with information on environmental threats and climate change risks such as flood risk datasets or outcomes of urban climate models to derive the exposure of the population. With this information, city planners can derive new information on the number of people exposed to climatic impacts and natural hazards.
