Resilience is not a nice to have any more. It is the question of our time. A strong Europe has to be able to protect itself, and a large part of that protection comes from space.
GeoVille is proudly continuing its work to bolster European preparedness in different sectors, like disaster resilience, border & maritime security or enhanced situational awareness, amongst others. Since 2023, within the SmartConnect project and with ESA's support under the Civil Security from Space programme, we've created the first stepping stone, a unifying middleware, towards a standardized approach for how First Responders access and utilize space-borne technologies. Together with 14 partners from 5 countries, a selection of technologies was developed to reach this goal. Read more here
With the SmartConnect project nearing its finale, the idea behind it has evolved and found a new path. Now, with ESA's guidance, we have the privilege to build the SRN Reference System, the blueprint for the European Space Resilience Nodes (SRN). The activity has been launched within ESA's new European Resilience from Space – Earth Observation (ERS-EO) programme, under Element 2 activities, and the reference system is designed for implementation all over Europe. An SRN is like a hub for the country, connecting all service providers, tools and technologies with the first responders and other security organisations, but there is more.
Space Resilience Nodes are interconnected, and this serves multiple purposes:
Pooling and sharing of technologies. Europe shall have the capacity to act as a continent in dire situations, not just as isolated regions.
Enhanced resilience through mutual backups. Multiple levels of backups will ensure that an outage or any other kind of failure of a node, or of multiple nodes, does not put access to vital tools at risk.
One blueprint for all. No multiple standards that have to be translated, one approach that unifies access, exploitation and procurement of technologies. When a technology is available through one node, it can be accessed through any other node, the standards remain the same.
Because in times like these, access to vital tools must not depend on a single country, a single system or a single point of failure.
