We are excited to announce the start of the 2024 global production of the Copernicus Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) EMC-BUILT layer, part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service of the European Commission.
Following the successful release of the first global production for 2022, the consortium has now entered the next production cycle. Between the two production campaigns, a dedicated enhancement phase focused on addressing the most critical findings from the 2022 production, further improving the robustness, consistency, and overall quality of the EMC-Built processing workflow.
The 2024 production leverages Sentinel-2 imagery, advanced AI-based processing, noise-reduction methodologies, and high-performance computing to generate globally consistent built-up surface products. The refined workflow builds on the experience gained during the first production, ensuring even higher quality and consistency while maintaining global scalability.
These datasets provide essential information on the distribution of built-up areas worldwide, supporting disaster risk management, emergency response, exposure assessment, urban planning, and a wide range of applications that rely on accurate and up-to-date human settlement information.
This milestone is the result of the excellent collaboration between GeoVille, CLS, Vypno, DLR, GAF, and the Joint Research Centre (JRC). Together, the consortium will process the entire globe over the coming months, delivering the next generation of global built-up information for the Copernicus programme.
