CEMS Global Flood Monitoring - New Report

As part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, managed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, the Global Flood Monitoring (GFM) service, operated by a consortium led by EODC, provides continuous, automated satellite-based flood monitoring on a global level.

The continuous monitoring and regular assessment enables improvements to the quality of the GFM product and the service in general and forms therefore an integral part of the service. The results of these activities, led by GeoVille, performed throughout the year 2023 are compiled in an Annual Product and Service Quality Assessment Report which has been published recently.

The quality is assessed based on a defined set of Key Performance Indicators that indicate the product and service quality as well as the user uptake. The thematic accuracy of the main GFM output layers, i.e. Observed Flood Extent and Reference Water Masks, is assessed on a set of 12 known flood events throughout the year 2023 as well as from the Sentinel-1 archive which has been processed and made available last year.
