Automated forest monitoring with Artificial Intelligence

Project AI4Trees officially wrapped up! We are thrilled to share that our GeoVille Team, together with amazing consortium partners, has officially wrapped up the AI4Trees project – a journey where cutting-edge tech met sustainability.

The consortium set out to develop climate-sensitive tree growth models using terrestrial & aerial laser scanning, satellite imagery, and continuous dendrometer data, as well as new approaches for sustainable forest management aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Particularly, GeoVille Team aimed to push the boundaries of forest monitoring and climate research by developing a single-tree detection model to support fine-scale change analysis, including selective logging detection.

Along the way, we learned valuable lessons that small crowns, inconsistent imagery, and limited training diversity remain challenges to true scalability. These insights now shape the direction of our future developments.

Overall, this project represents a significant step toward automated, large-scale forest monitoring – a crucial capability for understanding and responding to the effects of climate change.

A big thank-you to our consortium partners and colleagues for the collaboration:
