NEOS-QUICK Results
Description
- Thematic maps providing geo-referenced information on area, location, distribution of land use/ land cover
- Forest is optionally differentiated into forest type classes and according to structural forest parameters
left: land cover/ use map (Lower Austria)
|
middle: forest map (Vorarlberg)
|
right: forest type map (Altenberg, Germany) |
- High precision forest maps can be derived from very high resolution imagery (aerial photographs/ IKONOS data)
left: forest map according to forest law (Gargellen valley)
|
right: "biological forest", mapping of single trees (Montafon) |
Compliance with Kyoto Protocol
- The Kyoto Protocol defines a "forest" as follows
- Minimum area of land of 0.05 - 1.0 ha
- Tree crown cover 10 - 30%
- Minimum height 2 - 5 m at maturity in situ
- Achievable EO mapping parameters
- Geometry
- Minimum mapping unit (MMU) down to 0.05 ha (depending on requirements)
- Geometric accuracy: RMS error < 0.5 x pixel
- Thematic
- Dedicated land categories for greenhouse gas inventory reporting and/ or map classes according to CORINE nomenclature
- Forest crown cover >30%
- Thematic accuracy of EO based forest extent (results for Vorarlberg)
- LANDSAT based: 95.2 % (MMU 1 ha, crown cover > 30%)
- Aerial photography based:
- Austrian forest law: 97.5% (MMU 0.1 ha, crown cover > 30%)
- Biological forest: 96.6% (MMU < 0.05 ha)
