NEOS-QUICK Approach

NEOS-QUICK tests, combines and compares a variety of data from airborne and spaceborne sensors, in different and partly “difficult” alpine regions in Austria and Germany, for several LULUCF parameters. These include land cover and forest extent, forest change, crown cover, species, vegetation height, above ground biomass, and carbon stock.

The spatial resolution of the systems employed varies from the sub-metre range up to 300 m, and the spectral range comprises optical systems, SAR images as well as Lidar data. Novel polarimetric SAR systems and their synergy with current optical systems are investigated, and also interferometric techniques are included. The investigations confirm the operational status of land cover and forest retrieval including tree crown cover, and showed encouraging results concerning a correlation of EO based parameters and LULUCF parameter estimates in combination with detailed forest inventory.

Test sites
In order to document and validate the usefulness of EO images and thereof derived information for national Kyoto reporting of LULUCF parameters, various data from different test sites in Austria and Germany ranging from high-mountainous to flat areas have been considered:
  • Vorarlberg and Stand Montafon, Austria
  • Lower Austria, Austria
  • Region Altenberg, Germany
