The service exploits high resolution radar and optical multispectral satellite imagery and field data to generate maps depicting the acreage of rice cultivation areas and other crop types. Additional parameters comprise cropping systems, crop cycles, date of emergence and harvest and the identification of rice planted under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI).
 
The purpose is to build capacity for mapping and monitoring changes in crop cultivation patterns and crop yields,and to evaluate the impacts of floods and droughts.
