Monitoring desertification in Africa

The Global Monitoring of Soil Moisture for Water Hazards Assessment (GMSM) project aims at advancing the use of soil moisture services based on radar satellite systems, most importantly METOP ASCAT, ENVISAT ASAR and SMOS.

GeoVille’s contribution is the development of a soil water based index product to document the trends and changes of desertification in Africa since 1990, identify the role of soil-moisture as an indicator for desertification and thereby improve methods for land degradation monitoring.
