The DIVERSITY2010 users requested the provision of a set of indicators to assess the progress towards the 2010 target. One headline indicator is Trends in extent of selected biomes, ecosystems and habitats. Information about trends in the extent of biomes, ecosystems and habitat-types on a global scale is a crucial part of understanding the state and trends of biodiversity as a whole, and determining the extent to which the 2010 target is being met.
The following indicators will be implemented to provide statistics and maps on the extent over time:
- Global trends in forest ecosystems extent: Global extent of forests at least at three points in time, minimum spatial resolution 1 km, considering different forest types (boreal, temperate, tropical forests)
- Global trends in forest ecosystem fragmentation / connectivity: Global measures of fragmentation and connectivity of forests, at least at three points in time, minimum spatial resolution 1 km
- Global trends in grassland ecosystems extent: Global extent of grassland at least at three points in time, minimum spatial resolution 1 km
- Global trends in cropland ecosystems extent: Global extent of crop land at least at three points in time, minimum spatial resolution 1 km
- Global extent of urban areas: Global extent of urban area for 2005, minimum spatial resolution 300 m
- Global trends in dryland ecosystems extent: Mask drylands using dryland mask, provide trend information including land cover changes (from class – to class)
- Global trends in wetland ecosystems extent: Trend information where possible. Currently wetlands are not comparable in the three global data sets. Consider to focus on large, cross-continent RAMSAR wetlands outside of Europe
Project users are aware that best available compromise solutions will need to be investigated as the best needed information for the provision of the requested information to deliver the indicator Trends in extent of selected biomes, ecosystems and habitats does not exist today.
