Objective
This project aims at studying, defining, demonstrating and validating a number of geoinformation products and services based on EO-technology for supporting the user community involved in the implementation of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). ESA has identified several champion users (UNESCO, CCAD, CBD Secretariat, MarViva) strongly engaged within the community of biodiversity. They have formulated initial users requirements for distinct products and services to be elaborated within the project.
Users
The project is operated with strong involvement of the organisations selected as champion users by ESA:
- UNESCO – www.unesco.org
- The Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – www.biodiv.org
- Centro American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) – www.ccad.ws
- MarViva – www.marviva.net
Consortium
For the performance of the project, the following companies and institutes have teamed in conformance with their corporate strategies and interests:
- GeoVille Information Systems GmbH (GeoVille), Austria, (PRIME) – www.geoville.com
- Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC), Norway – www.nersc.no
- Collecte Localisation Sataellites (CLS), France – www.cls.fr
- University of Exceter, Marine Spatial Ecology Lab (MSEL), United Kingdom – www.projects.ex.ac.uk/msel/projects/sensing.html

Partner background experiences range from landmapping (by use of remote sensing and GIS) and oceanography to coral reef monitoring.
Acknowledgement
We acknowledge the funding of the project “DIVERSITY SUPPORTING THE CBD” by ESA within DUE program (dup.esrin.esa.it). MERIS (FR and RR), ERS and SPOT data used are provided by ESA as part of a CAT-1 project (CAT-1 No. 4202). Furthermore, we acknowledge the use Globcover2005, GlobColour and Medspiration data kindly provided by ESA. Local ancillary data are kindly provided by the user organizations involved in the project.
